Global Warming Pollution & CO2 Sequestration bills
The following is a list of bills pertaining to Global Warming Pollution and CO2 Sequestration that MEIC followed at the 2007 Legislature, and their final status:
SB 105 (Sen. Greg Lind, D-Missoula): This bill would provide tax breaks for equipment to sequester carbon dioxide. MEIC position: OPPOSE. MEIC's position is that the cost of capturing carbon dioxide needs to ultimately be reflected in the cost of fossil fuel-generated power, which would bring those rates in line with alternative energy sources like wind and solar. Therefefore, MEIC doesn't support tax breaks for carbon sequestration equipment.
- Bill tabled in (H) Taxation Committee 4/24/07.
SB 218 (Sen. Greg Lind, D-Missoula, and Sen. Ron Erickson, D-Missoula): This bill would define and require state to develop geologic sequestration standards for CO2. MEIC position: SUPPORT. SEE FACT SHEET on carbon sequestration (196 K pdf)
- Bill tabled in (H) Natural Resources committee.
HB 753 (Rep. Betsy Hands, D-Missoula): This bill would require the state to develop a plan for reducing global warming pollution levels to 1990 levels by 2020. MEIC position: SUPPORT. See "New West" article on this bill.
- Bill tabled by (H) Natural Resources committee on 3/31/07. Motion to take from table in Natural Resources and place on 2nd Reading failed 46-46.
SJ 20 (Sen. Mike Cooney, D-Helena): A resolution calling on the federal government to cap emissions of global warming pollution going into the atmosphere. MEIC position: SUPPORT.
