Writing a Letter to the Editor
HOW TO WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Letters to the editor are a powerful tool for bringing issues to public attention. If you spend the time to put thoughtful words on paper (or type them into the computer) and forward your letter to one or several newspaper editors, you can literally reach thousands of people across the state.
What better way to counter the special interest PR machine than with personal letters from citizens who care deeply about the future of our state’s environment? This is perhaps the easiest and most effective way you can have an impact.
Here are a few hints:
- Be brief. Letters should be less than 200 words. Otherwise, they may not be read, and some editors may delete sections you many not want deleted, or omit the letter entirely.
- Be accurate. Be sure than any facts contained in your letter are accurate. MEIC will be happy to provide assistance.
- Provide verification. Include your phone number, address, and signature on the letter. The newspaper will want to contact you for verification that you wrote the letter.
- Appeal to the reader. Use short sentences with action verbs and colorful adjectives. Include personal experiences.
- Maximize coverage. Send your letter to daily and weekly papers throughout the region.
- Appeal to the editor. Your letter is more likely to be printed promptly if it is tied to current developments.
Send a copy of your letter to MEIC. We like to keep track of member activities, and would love to hear what you have to say.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS!
