Outdoor Recreationists

Whether you are a fourth-generation Montanan, relocated here, or dream of visiting again someday, you value Montana for its magnificent mountains, clean air and water, and wide open spaces.

MEIC is Montana’s environmental “watchdog.”  The organization is perhaps best know for the twice-won, citizen-initiated law banning cyanide heap-leach mining in Montana

MEIC also has successfully influenced state and federal agencies for more than three decades, monitoring issues from old growth forest protection, to standards for coal bed methane development in Eastern Montana, to air and water pollution permits. When all else fails, MEIC utilizes litigation to ensure that environmental laws are complied with.

As part of the Coalition to Protect the Rocky Mountain Front, MEIC has worked to prevent fossil fuel development and oil and gas exploration in this unique and sensitive environment.

Overheard...

"It would be possible to find more fossil fuels, and extend our addiction and pollution of the environment, should we be so foolish as to take the path of extracting unconventional fossil fuels such as tar shale and tar sands on a large scale. That choice cannot be left to the discretion of industry moguls. The planet does not belong to them."
